​In South Florida, the 10-year mark is a significant milestone for any HVAC system. The combination of relentless heat, high humidity, and salt-air exposure means most units begin to hit a performance "wall" around a decade of service. At this stage, homeowners face a critical decision: invest in a brand-new system or perform a "deep restoration" to potentially squeeze out another five years of life.


​1. Evaluating the Heart of the System: The Compressor


​The compressor is the most expensive and vital component of your AC. By year 10, its efficiency often begins to degrade due to wear and tear on internal valves or motor windings.

What to Do: If the coil is already leaking or severely corroded, the cost of the refrigerant alone (especially if it uses the older R-410A) often makes a full replacement the more logical financial choice.

​Since 2023, the industry has shifted to SEER2 standards, which measure efficiency under more realistic duct pressure conditions.
​The Technical Reality: A new SEER2-compliant system can be significantly more efficient than a 10-year-old unit that has lost 20–30% of its original efficiency due to age. While a restoration costs less upfront, the monthly power bill savings of a new high-efficiency unit can often "pay back" the difference within a few years.

What to Do: Compare the cost of a "deep restoration" (which might include a new blower motor, capacitor, and contactor) against the 10-year warranty and energy savings of a new installation.
